World Youth Skills Day 2026: Empowering Young People To Shape The Future Of Work

Artificial intelligence is transforming industries. Green jobs are reshaping economies. Employers are increasingly hiring for skills rather than qualifications, while new technologies continue to redefine how work is organised. For today’s young people, preparing for the future of work means navigating a world changing faster than any generation before them.

This rapid transformation presents both unprecedented opportunities and significant challenges. Whether young people are equipped to thrive in this new reality will shape not only their individual futures but also the future of communities, economies, and nations.

Africa has a median age of approximately 19.5 yearsThe continent is home to the world’s youngest population This demographic advantage has enormous potential, but only if young people have access to the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to participate meaningfully in an increasingly digital, interconnected, and rapidly evolving global economy.

Recognising this reality, The Future Project remains committed to preparing young people to succeed in the future of work. Through leadership development, career readiness, entrepreneurship, digital learning, and civic engagement initiatives, the organisation equips young people with the practical skills, confidence, and mindset needed to navigate change and create impact in their communities.

The changing world of work demands a broader set of competencies than ever before. While technical expertise remains important, employers are increasingly looking for individuals who can adapt quickly, solve complex problems, collaborate across diverse teams, communicate effectively, think entrepreneurially, and continue learning throughout their careers. Digital and AI literacy, creativity, emotional intelligence, resilience, and ethical leadership are becoming essential skills alongside traditional qualifications.

This is why World Youth Skills Day, observed annually on 15 July, remains one of the most important global moments for advancing youth development. Established by the United Nations, the day recognises the critical role of skills development in promoting employment, decent work, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.

More than a day of awareness, World Youth Skills Day brings together governments, educators, employers, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, development organisations, and young people  to strengthen collaboration around one shared goal: ensuring that skills development keeps pace with the changing demands of the global economy.

This year’s theme, “Skills for a Shared Future,” highlights an important truth. Preparing young people is no longer simply about helping them respond to change, it is  about empowering them to lead it.  Building a shared future requires education and skills programmes that foster innovation while strengthening inclusion, sustainability, and cross-cultural collaboration.

To mark World Youth Skills Day 2026, The Future Project will convene young people, industry leaders, educators, and development partners for a conversation and learning experience focused on building future-ready competencies. We will look to understand how policymakers, educators and development partners can deliver a shared future for young people.

As we commemorate World Youth Skills Day, the conversation must extend beyond employment statistics and labour market trends. It is ultimately about unlocking human potential. Every young person deserves the opportunity to develop the skills, confidence, and support needed to contribute meaningfully to society and build a fulfilling future.

Investing in youth skills is not simply an investment in young people, it is an investment in stronger economies, more resilient communities, and a more inclusive and sustainable world.
